SUMMARY:Apiary Meeting July 2018 - Murton CHANGE OF DATE
DESCRIPTION:Martin Ainsley\nAs experienced Beekeepers know\, and beginners will be discovering\, bees do not always read the same books as we do! \nIMPORTANT – OPEN APIARY 21ST JULY WILL NOW START AT 10.30 NOT AT 12 NOON\nOur Association Apiarist\, Martin Ainsley\, would like to demonstrate the making up of a nucleus from a burgeoning colony – and the bees at Murton will not be ready for this manipulation on Saturday 7th July\, therefore the date was changed to the 21st July instead.\nThe time and venue remain the same\, and members should\, as always\, come with freshly laundered suits and clean boots and gloves.

SUMMARY:Special Meeting - Constitution Vote
DESCRIPTION:Please read this!\nOn 1st August 2017 I circulated a copy of the proposed new Charitable Incorporated Organisation Constitution plus other documents to those of you who were on the database at that date. I advised you that we would be holding a vote on this on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming\, Murton\, starting at 19:00 hours. Under the terms of Clause 11 of our current 2008 Constitution\, we are required to do this at a special meeting of the Association.\nIf you have joined as a new member since 1st August 2017 and have not previously received a copy of this paperwork that I sent out\, please contact me by email and I will forward you a copy.\nClause 4 of our 2008 Constitution requires that membership subscriptions are due for payment on the 1st October of each year\, and that anyone who fails to renew by 31st December loses their privileges of membership. The wording of this Clause is felt to be grey and open to interpretation\, so for the avoidance of doubt\, your Committee decided last evening that only those members who have PAID  their membership subscription for the current membership year (2017-2018) shall be entitled to vote – although those members who are in the “period of grace” are welcome to attend\, but will not be able to vote.\nThe Committee has instructed me to bring along the up to date paid membership register as at close of business on 21st November 2017 so that there is clarity as to who has paid and who has not. A membership form and full instructions on how to pay is available for downloading from our web site here\, so if you want to vote\, please renew your subscription promptly.\nIn brief we will be voting on the following proposals:\n(1)    Whether to accept the proposed new 2017 Constitution to replace our 2008 Constitution\n(2)    Extending the current financial year (which started on 1st July 2017) to 30th September 2018 from 30th June 2018\n(3)    Changing the financial year to run from 1st October one year to 30th September the following year\, with effect from 1st October 2018\nThe exact date that the 2017 Constitution becomes effective (should it be passed in the vote) will be advised when approval has been received back from the Charity Commission\, with whom it will be filed after the meeting. My best guess is early in the New Year.

SUMMARY:Preparing for the Honey Show
DESCRIPTION:Richard and Shirley Bond of Harrogate and Ripon BKA\nAt our Annual Honey Show last November\, we noticed that entry numbers were a little lower than in previous years\, and wondered whether we could do more to help new and intermediate beekeepers to prepare for showing.\nWith this in mind\, we have arranged a visit from Richard and Shirley Bond of Harrogate and Ripon BKA. They have been involved for more than ten years with the staging of their own association honey show\, and are ideally placed to share their wisdom on the subject. They have also produced an extremely helpful little brochure\, a copy of which is available here (PDF\, 4MB).\nThe Schedule of entries for our own show is available here. Don’t start practising yet for Class 13\, as the standard recipe is due for a rewrite!\nObviously both this talk and the Show itself are some way off\, but please do put the date in your diary now\, as this talk is additional to our regular programme and could easily be overlooked. And if you have recently extracted a rather pleasing batch of honey\, set a few jars aside now – it could be a winner.

SUMMARY:Giles Budge - “Pesticides\, pathogens\, pests and pollinators”
DESCRIPTION:Our regular monthly meeting\, the speakers this time will be Giles Budge – “Pesticides\, pathogens\, pests and pollinators”\nWe are very fortunate to have with us on Wednesday Dr. Giles Budge\, who is an applied scientist with expertise in pathology\, apiculture\, diagnostics and crop protection.\nHis research focuses on helping policy-makers and industry by finding intelligent solutions to real problems. Giles led a successful £21m bid to establish a national Centre of Innovation in Crop Health and Protection in York. He has provided expert evidence to inform several policy reviews surrounding pollinator health and protection.\nDr. Budge is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Entomology and a member of the Bee Health and Advisory Forum. He believes strongly that high quality outputs are more likely to result from interdisciplinary science and his ethos is to work collaboratively rather than in isolation. This is evidenced by leading several large collaborative grants\, including a successful BBSRC* funded transatlantic partnering award and a project funded under the Insect Pollinator Initiative.\n* I had to look this up: – Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council\nRefreshments as usual from 7.00pm.

SUMMARY:Margaret Thomas - “Why Bees Behave the Way They Do”
DESCRIPTION:Refreshments as usual from 7.00pm.\nMargaret Thomas CSP NDB our Speaker on 15th February 2017\nMargaret Thomas lived in Essex where she and her husband Dick learnt their beekeeping in the 1970s under the tutelage of Ted Hooper. While in Essex she passed her BBKA examinations to become a Master Beekeeper and then went on to get her NDB in 1982. At about this time she became acquainted with York through her involvement with the weeks’ residential courses held here for the NDB tutor team.\nAt Ted Hooper’s retirement she joined the group of some 12 beekeepers led by Clive deBruyn (the newly appointed CBI) discussing varying topics and culminating in a two week stay with queen rearer John Keefus in Toulouse\, France. The group spent the time grafting (with adapted matchsticks)\, making fondant\, filling mini nucs\, putting them out for mating and placing mated queens in travel cages ready for the post.\nMargaret was an active member of the Essex Beekeepers for 39 years and was awarded their Life Membership in 2010.\nDuring her time as a Bee Farmer she was running between 40 and 60 colonies and was much involved with the Bee Farmers Association\, as Magazine\, Pesticides\, Minutes and Pollination Secretary – the last of these roles required her to allocate around 1000 hives in Kent\, on top fruit\, borage and OSR.\nMargaret retired to Scotland in 2009 and is rising to the challenge of keeping a small number of colonies in a fickle climate. She lectures widely\, and in addition to publishing her own articles has updated Ted Hooper’s Guide to Bees and Honey and the Beginners Bee Book\nShe is now a committee member of the Scottish Beekeepers Association\, where her brief is all subjects related to hive products.

SUMMARY:Asian hornet trap making workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Asian Hornet\, Vespa velutina\, is an aggressive predator of honey bees and other beneficial insects. It has extended its geographical range from Asia to mainland Europe following an accidental introduction to France\, is now also present in Spain\, Belgium\, Portugal and Italy and the UK. Adult hornets are highly mobile; the rate of spread across France is approximately 100 km/year. Hanging a simple trap in your apiary will allow you to monitor for pest arrival and\, if necessary\, help to protect your colonies from attack. These are especially effective if used in late winter and early spring.\nReports from France suggest that in areas where spring trapping has been used\, subsequent numbers of Asian hornet nests are reduced by as much as 97% (2 or 3 nests in trapping areas versus >70 nests where no traps have been hung).\nFollowing advice from the NBU\, we are organising a trap making workshop on the 28th January 2017 from 10.00am\, at the Bee Pavilion\, Murton (the Association’s apiary).\nRequired materials:\n– a couple of pop bottles – Look for pop or fizzy water bottle which has ridged sides with the bottom section marginally wider than the middle.\n– plastic coated garden wire\n– 100mm square off-cut of wire mesh\n– sharp knife or Stanley blade\n– scissors\nOn the day will assemble one trap together following the NBU guidance\, and you can make more at home if you wish.

SUMMARY:Derek and Elaine Mitchell - “Hive Warming”
DESCRIPTION:Our regular monthly meeting\, the speakers this time will be Derek and Elaine Mitchell – “Hive Warming”\nRefreshments as usual from 7.00pm.\nDerek and Elaine Mitchell have undertaken rigorous research into the best way to maintain the correct temperature within a colony. Derek is an engineer by profession. When his wife took up beekeeping\, he became interested in trying to find out the optimum temperature inside a beehive\, and this led to their now much wider research.\nOur events coordinator was particularly keen to have them on the Speaker programme as we feel that their lecture will throw some scientific light on the question of polystyrene versus conventional hives\, as well as looking at tree hives and other options. This promises to be a most interesting lecture and we hope we will give them a good audience.
